About the reading

A new
play

In a small north-central Florida town, there's a women's bar called Gloria's. It has a jukebox, a pink aluminum Christmas tree and a bartender named Georgette who has one rule: we don't call the cops. Out on Highway 441 there's a run-down motor court called the Glory Motel, and in Room 9 the state of Florida is asking questions.

The Johns Committee, Florida's legislative investigation committee, is hunting for "deviates." Its men write down license plates in the parking lot. They send form letters and hold "interviews" that end in firings, resignations and lists of names. Georgette, her sharp-tongued old friend Irene, lovesick factory worker Shay and newcomer Crystal, a rodeo cowgirl, have built a world inside Gloria's. Now someone has let the Committee in.

Funny, tender and furious by turns, Only One Question looks at a real and little-known chapter of Florida history. It's about the price of a name, the meaning of loyalty and the people who decide not to answer.
